Chromium ore can be divided into primary Cr2O3 (>45%) and secondary Cr2O3 (>35%) according to chemical composition.

1. Chrome sand in foundry industry

l Its properties make the material suitable for use in highly loaded gray iron and steel foundries as cores and molding sand.

l High thermal conductivity makes it have good cooling performance, and low thermal expansion makes it have good dimensional stability.

l The alkalinity is close to neutral, and can be widely used in resin bonding systems and inorganic binders, with high refractoriness and wide sieving distribution.

l In iron and steel production, chromite sand is used as a filler to protect sliding gates of large ladles.

Chrome drainage sand is made from chromite sand and additives. It has the advantages of high specific gravity, good fluidity, high melting point, and no excessive sintering. In chromium drainage sand, when the addition of chromite is greater than 60%, the chromite is continuously distributed, and this distribution helps to form a continuous sintered layer. At high temperature, FeO in chromite ore undergoes desolvation reaction to generate secondary spinel, which changes the volume of the sintered layer and produces cracks. In this way, when the slide plate is opened, the unsintered drainage sand under the nozzle flows out rapidly, the cracks of the sintered layer expand rapidly, and the sintered layer is completely destroyed under the static pressure of molten steel, thereby achieving the purpose of automatic pouring. Most large steel mills use chrome drainage sand, which accounts for about 30% of the entire ladle drainage sand, especially for refining ladles.
