Chromite DescriptionChromite is a crystalline mineral mainly composed of iron(II) oxide and chromium(III) oxide compounds. It can be represented by the chemical formula FeCr2O4. It is an oxide mineral belonging to the spinel family. Magnesium can replace iron in varying amounts because it forms a solid solution with magnesite (MgCr2O4). [6] Aluminum elements may also be substituted to form pinnacleite (FeAl2O4). [7] Today, chromite is mined primarily for the manufacture of stainless steel through the production of ferrochromium (FeCr), an iron-chromium alloy. [8] Chromite grains are commonly found in large mafic igneous intrusions, such as the Bushvelds in South Africa and India. Chromite is iron black with a metallic luster and dark brown streaks, and has a hardness of 5.5 on the Mohs scale. [9]

Industrial applicationsFor hardening steel, making stainless steel and forming alloys. Used in electroplating to produce a hard, aesthetically pleasing surface and protect against corrosion.
