1. Introduction
High-strength silicon carbide kiln shelfThin and lightweight, made from an advanced silicon nitride carbide composition, it is stronger and half the weight or less than traditional 1" thick cordierite kiln frames. They won't sag or warp after multiple burns under heavy loads, are suitable for temperatures up to 2600°F, and are an excellent choice for gas, soda, and fired kilns. They cost about twice as much as cordierite or high alumina kiln frames.

The kiln frame should be stored upright. Laying them flat makes them more likely to break or crack. Keep shelf dry. If they do get wet (for example, after a kiln wash), heat them slowly and soak them at 300°F for a few hours.
Kiln wash is a layer of material between the pot and the kiln frame, which protects the kiln frame during glaze firing and prevents the glaze from sticking to the frame. If the clay body vitrifies, the unglazed jar will stick to the kiln frame. The kiln washing liquid is made of silica sand, aluminum hydroxide and kaolin. You can mix your own kiln wash or buy it.

Even if you wipe off the glaze on the bottom or use stilts, if something unexpected happens during the glaze firing process (e.g. flow, tipping the pot), the glaze will come into contact with the kiln frame. If kiln washing is not used in the above possible cases, your pan will stick to the rack and crack when you try to remove it. You have to grind the glaze off the surface of the shelf, the remaining glaze soaking into the shelf will continue to attack the kiln frame.

We also recommend kiln washing the kiln bottom bricks to prevent dripping glaze from damaging the soft bricks.
