Name: graphite electrode
Description: Electrodes carry the electricity that heats electric arc furnaces (the vast majority of steel furnaces). They are made by mixing petroleum coke with petroleum pitch, extruding it, baking it to sinter, and then graphitizing it by heating it above the temperature at which carbon converts to graphite (3000 °C). They can vary in size, up to 11 feet long and 30 inches in diameter.
