A. Household items

Borax is used in a variety of household laundry and cleaning products. Some tooth bleaching formulas also contain borax.

B. buffer zone

Sodium borate is used in biochemical and chemical laboratories to prepare buffers such as those used in DNA gel electrophoresis such as TBE in coating procedures or the newer SB buffer or BBS (Borate Buffered Saline). Borate buffer (typically pH 8) is also used as a preferential equilibration solution in DMP-based crosslinking reactions.

C. Flux

A mixture of borax and ammonium chloride is used as a flux when welding steel. It lowers the melting point of unwanted iron oxide (scale) allowing it to drain away. Borax can also be mixed with water and used as a flux when soldering jewelry metals such as gold or silver. It allows molten solder to flow evenly over the associated joint. Borax is also a good flux to "pre-tin" the tungsten with zinc, making the tungsten solderable.
