Bentonite is a clay often produced by volcanic alteration and consists primarily of smectite minerals, usually montmorillonite. Other smectite minerals include hectorite, talc, beidellite and nontronite. Smectites are clay minerals, i.e. they consist of individual crystallites, most of which have a maximum dimension of less than 2 µm.

The degree of hydration produces intergranular swelling. According to the nature of its origin, bentonite also contains a variety of accessory minerals in addition to montmorillonite. These minerals may include quartz, feldspar, calcite and gypsum. The presence of these minerals affects the industrial value of the deposit, reducing or increasing its value depending on the application.
