Perlite is a siliceous volcanic glass formed by volcanic eruptions. It is named for its unique concentric cracks that resemble pearls. Perlite ores include perlite, obsidian, and asphaltic stone. Perlite expands into a new lightweight material when heated to high temperatures. It has the characteristics of non-toxic, odorless, fireproof, heat insulation, sound absorption, low thermal conductivity, stable chemical properties, and wide applicable temperature range.
Function:
Perlite is a soilless growing medium that has helped increase the aeration of soil mixes for many years. It is made of fumarole glass, an extremely light and porous material. Due to its porosity, it has one of the best oxygen retention levels of all growth media.
Its weight can be a disadvantage in certain hydroponic systems where the water interacts directly with the growing medium, causing it to move around and get washed away. Because of this, perlite is rarely used alone - usually it is mixed with coir, soil or vermiculite;
