Perlite is a siliceous volcanic glass produced by volcanic eruptions, named for its unique concentric cracks that resemble pearls. Perlite ores include perlite, obsidian, and pitchite. When perlite is heated to high temperature, it expands to become a new lightweight material. It has the characteristics of non-toxic, odorless, fireproof, heat insulation, sound absorption, low thermal conductivity, stable chemical properties, and wide applicable temperature range.
Function:
Perlite is a soilless growing medium that has helped increase the aeration of soil mixes for many years. It is made of gas-filled volcanic glass, an extremely light and porous material. Due to its porosity, it has one of the best oxygen retention levels of all growth media.
Its weight can be a disadvantage in certain hydroponic systems where the water interacts directly with the growing medium, causing it to move and be washed away. For this reason, perlite is seldom used alone - it is usually mixed with coir, soil or vermiculite;
