Formaldehyde (systematic name methanol) is a naturally occurring organic compound with the chemical formula CH2O (H−CHO). It is the simplest aldehyde (R−CHO).
Formaldehyde is more complex than many simple carbon compounds because it takes several different forms. Formaldehyde is a colorless gas with a characteristic pungent odor. After condensation, the gas is converted to various other forms of formaldehyde (with different chemical formulas) that are of more practical value. One derivative is the cyclic trimeric formaldehyde (1,3,5-trioxane), which has the formula (CH2O)3. There is also a linear polymer called paraformaldehyde. These compounds have similar chemical properties and are often used interchangeably.
When formaldehyde dissolves in water, it also forms a hydrate, methanediol, which has the molecular formula H2C(OH)2. The compound is also in equilibrium with various oligomers (short polymers), depending on concentration and temperature. A saturated aqueous solution with a formaldehyde content of about 40% (volume) or 37% (mass) is called "100% formalin". Small amounts of stabilizers, such as methanol, are usually added to inhibit oxidation and polymerization. Typical commercial grade formalin may contain 10-12% methanol in addition to various metal impurities. "Formaldehyde" was first used as a generic trademark in 1893, and the previous trade name was "formalin".

When treated with phenol, urea, or melamine, formaldehyde produces hard thermosetting phenol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, and melamine resins, respectively.

Formaldehyde is also a precursor to polyfunctional alcohols such as pentaerythritol.

Formaldehyde solution can be used as a disinfectant and fungicide.

Formaldehyde is used in the manufacture of animal feed.

Formaldehyde can preserve or fix tissues or cells. Used as a tissue fixative and antiseptic.

Formaldehyde is used in drug testing and photography.
