Silver nitrate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula AgNO3. It is a versatile precursor to many other silver compounds, such as those used in photography. It is far less sensitive to light than halides. In solid silver nitrate, silver ions are arranged in a three-coordinate plane triangle.

Silver nitrate has various uses in organic synthesis, such as for deprotection and oxidation.
In histology, silver nitrate is used in silver staining to visualize reticular fibers, proteins, and nucleic acids. Therefore, it is also used to display proteins in PAGE gels. Can be used as a stain for scanning electron microscopy.
Indelible ink. Silver nitrate can create long-lasting stains when applied to the skin.

Silver nitrate is an oxidizing agent and should be stored separately from organic matter. Although it is commonly used in very low concentrations to prevent gonorrhea and control epistaxis, silver nitrate is still highly toxic and corrosive. Other than purple, brown or black stains on the skin, brief exposure does not produce any immediate side effects, but with sustained exposure to high concentrations, side effects can be significant, including burns. Prolonged exposure may cause eye damage. Silver nitrate is known to irritate the skin and eyes.
