Minerals:
Minerals are natural solids formed through geological processes and have a characteristic chemical composition, highly ordered atomic structure and specific physical properties. Rocks, by contrast, are collections of minerals and/or mineraloids that do not need to have a specific chemical composition. The composition of minerals ranges from pure elements and simple salts to very complex silicates with thousands of known forms. The study of minerals is called mineralogy.

To be classified as a true mineral, a substance must be solid and have a crystalline structure. A mineral is (usually) an inorganic, naturally occurring, organized crystal structure consisting of a single compound or element. Mineral crystals form because their chemical composition tends to cluster together in certain arrangements determined by the shape and composition of the molecules involved (sometimes changing with temperature and pressure). These arrangements lead to the crystalline forms described in Physical Properties. Usually, minerals are formed when the solution is changed in some way, allowing or forcing the constituent minerals to solidify. The change could be temperature, pressure, chemical nature or concentration, and the solution could be an aqueous solution or magma, or even a gas.

Physical properties:
Classifying minerals can range from easy to very difficult. A mineral can be identified by a variety of physical properties, some of which are sufficient for full identification without error. In other cases, minerals can only be classified by more sophisticated chemical or X-ray diffraction analysis; however, these methods can be expensive and time-consuming.
